One fan’s show of support has been synonymous with Penrith’s success since 1991 and the lucky charm will fly again in this weekend’s NRL grand final
The white is now a beige and the yellow colour has run, the legacy of dozens of wet-weather matches. The sewing is starting to fray. But the Panthers’ lucky charm will fly again this weekend. Thirty-three years after Frank Neumann and his wife Ann made the “Purr-fect Panthers” banner, the much-loved sign will attend its sixth grand final this Sunday.
It has not always been in use, and spent many of the club’s lean years across the late 1990s and 2000s inside the Neumann garage, but when it has flown, more often than not, the Panthers have won. Neumann is happy to take at least some of the credit.
